MINUTES OF THE ASHFIELD YOUTH COMMITTEE OF ASHFIELD COUNCIL, HELD AT ASHFIELD TOWN HALL, FOYER, ON MONDAY 16 MAY 2011, COMMENCING AT 5:30 PM.

 

 

PRESENT Councillor Kelso, Gauri Nadkarni (Chair), Sophie Hawkshaw, Therese Scott.

 

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF LOCAL ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY

 

"Let us acknowledge that we are meeting on country for which the members and elders of the local Aboriginal community have been custodians for many centuries, and on which Aboriginal people have performed age old ceremonies. We acknowledge their living culture and unique role in the life of this region."

CONFIRMATION OF MINUTES

 

 

The minutes of the Ashfield Youth Committee Meeting held on Monday 2 May 2011 were accepted.

 

 

REPORT ON PREVIOUS ACTIONS

Camille and Victor were not in attendance therefore there is no report back on previous actions

 

COUNCIL UPDATE

Councillor Kelso advised that the four new community rooms in the new Civic Centre will be named after four Aboriginal members of the Ashfield Council Reconciliation Committee, including Patricia Blackman. This is something that the Youth Committee were keen to see happen. Mayor Councillor Ted Cassidy made this suggestion

 

 

 

2011 REFUGEE CONFERENCE

The Centre for Refugee Research at UNSW is organizing a Youth Forum-Conference from 14-15 June. The Forum aims to provide a platform for young leaders from across Australia to come together to identify and discuss issues that impact the lives of refugee young people both locally and internationally. Each Council in the state has been invited to send a youth representative along.

 

Action: Camille to email the group to ask for a volunteer to attend the Youth Forum from 14-15 June at UNSW.

 

EVENT PLANNING: YOUTH COOK

Gauri has contacted Little Spoons who can provide a menu or the group can give them a menu. Those at the meeting prefer not cook pasta and to have a vegetarian option. Theme suggested was classy, simple meals to cook for your family. A class of 2 -2/12 hours is long enough plus time to clean up. Target young people 12-18 years for this class. Those attending need to wear closed shoes and equipment, aprons, ingredients are provided. A possible date for the class is during the week of 25-29 July.

 

Action: Gauri to email Victor about a booking.

Action: Committee to provide a theme and date for the class by next meeting.

Action: Produce a promotional flyer to promote the cooking class

 

 

UPCOMING COMMITTEES

There will be some upcoming Council Committee meetings at Haberfield. A representative/s of the youth committee should attend.

 

Action: Councillor Kelso to email group about next Committee meetings.

 

 

GENERAL BUSINESS

 

Councillor Kelso is meeting with Councillor Lofts to discuss the refurbishment of the Skate Park. He will suggest a working party be formed in order to improve the skate facilities for youth in the area. The recommendations will be brought to Council. The working party would conduct surveys in the park to see what the community think.

 

Therese mentioned a HSC Creative Reading and Writing Class around the theme Belonging, which will be held at Haberfield Library on Friday July 8 at 2pm-4pm. Bookings essential 9716 1000.

The next meeting will be held at Ashfield Town Hall at 5.30pm 6.30pm on Monday 06 June 2011.
