The minutes of the Ashfield Access Committee Meeting held on Monday 7 March 2011 were confirmed.
Business Use of Public Footpaths
Council Working Group meeting deferred.
Access Committee Future Directions
When reintroduced at Council the Committee will encourage wider representation from people with disabilities/disability organisations. The Committee believes that this is an opportunity for Council to take a leading role in disability access issues.
Carnival of Cultures
The Carnival was cancelled due to bad weather and no rescheduling is planned.
1/1 That Council distribute the leftover plants to local
schools and organisations.
1. Committee Review
The Committee has decided to use it allocated budget (total 2011/2012 budget committed) to employ an Access Consultant to be a standing member. Ruth to collect quotes.
The Committee Terms of Reference need to be updated.
Membership is an ongoing issue. Ruth to follow up with Vision Australia. Councillor Stott to follow up with Cardinal Freeman Village.
Standing agenda items to be created for the Committee.
1/2 That Council engage an independent Access Consultant (such as Access Australia) to examine the access issues in the Wests Leagues Club DA.
2/2 That the appropriate Council officer from the Directorate of Planning and Environment attend the next Committee.
2. Disability Recreation Consultant
The Committee discussed all-inclusive playground models including ‘Boundless Playgrounds’ in the US and the ‘Liberty Swing’ program supported by Rotary.
1/1 That the Access Committee engage a Consultant using the 2010/2011 budget to work with Council’s Recreation Working Group to facilitate the instalment of all-inclusive playgrounds in the Ashfield LGA.
3. Update on Ashfield’s Disability Employment Program
Discussion addressed organisational difficulties of providing paid work/work experience for people with disabilities. Opportunities in the new Library will continue to be explored.
Inner West Councils are organising a 1-day training on the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, to happen on Thursday 02 June. Committee members attending include Councillor Stott, Meaghan Devane, Donna Economidis and Ruth Paillas.
